This book is my plea for prisons to provide greater safety and purpose for prisoners and staff. However, today, twenty years after I wrote Prisons of Promise, it is the case that prison is a byword for discord, boredom and aggression. Levels of violence have increased, people feel at risk, buildings are overcrowded and re-offending is high. Furthermore, it is very expensive.
I find it both timely and refreshing that Tessa West should have written such a positive and purposeful book.., which I recommend, unreservedly, to anyone who has an interest or involvement in prisons.
